AI Doesn't Make Websites Cheaper — It Makes Them Better
There's a growing assumption out there that AI should make websites dirt cheap. After all, if a machine is doing the work, why should you pay a developer?
I get the logic. But it's wrong.
AI is a tool — a brilliant one — but it doesn't replace the thinking, planning, and decision-making that goes into building a website that actually works for your business. What it does is let skilled developers work faster, smarter, and deliver a better result.
Let me explain.
The Myth: AI = Free Websites
You've probably seen the ads. "Build a website in 60 seconds with AI!" And technically, yes, you can generate a basic webpage in about a minute. But here's the thing — that webpage isn't a website.
A website that works for your business needs:
- Strategy — who are your customers, what do they need to see, and what action should they take?
- SEO — will Google actually find your site and rank it?
- Performance — does it load fast enough that people don't bounce?
- Trust signals — does it look professional enough that someone would hand over their money or contact details?
- Accessibility — can everyone use it, regardless of device or ability?
- Security — is it safe from attackers?
AI can help with all of these, but it can't make the strategic decisions for you. That's why the 10 layers of a proper website still matter, regardless of what tools you use. That's still a human job.
What AI Actually Does for Web Development
When I use AI tools like Replit in my workflow, here's what changes:
Speed: What might have taken two weeks in WordPress with Elementor, I can often deliver in a few days. Not because I'm cutting corners — because the tool handles the repetitive parts while I focus on the important decisions.
Quality: AI-generated code is clean and consistent. No plugin conflicts, no theme bloat, no "works on my machine" issues.
Customisation: Instead of fighting with a template to make it do something it wasn't designed for, I can build exactly what the project needs from scratch.
Iteration: Want to try a different layout? A different colour scheme? With AI tools, I can explore options in minutes rather than hours.
Why It Doesn't Make Things Cheaper
Here's the honest truth: the expensive part of web development was never the typing. It was always the thinking.
- Understanding your business and your customers
- Planning the user journey
- Writing copy that converts
- Designing something that feels right for your brand
- Setting up proper SEO from day one
- Testing everything across devices and browsers
- Making sure the site is accessible and secure
AI doesn't do any of that by itself. A developer who uses AI can do it faster and often better — but the expertise is still what you're paying for.
Think of it like this: a power drill doesn't make a carpenter cheaper. It lets a good carpenter build better furniture in less time. But you still need the carpenter.
The Danger of "Cheap AI Websites"
If someone is offering you a website for £200 because they "use AI," be careful. What you'll likely get is:
- A generic template with your logo slapped on
- No SEO strategy
- No performance optimisation
- No mobile testing
- No ongoing support
And in six months, you'll be wondering why your site isn't ranking, why nobody's filling in the contact form, and why it looks like every other small business website on the internet.
A properly built website — whether using AI tools or not — is an investment. There are layers to a proper website that cheap builders simply skip.
What You Should Actually Expect
When you work with a developer who uses AI tools properly, you should expect:
- A faster turnaround (days or weeks, not months)
- A more polished result (cleaner code, better performance)
- More flexibility (easier to customise and extend)
- Lower ongoing costs (less maintenance, fewer security patches)
But the upfront investment in getting it right? That's still there. Because getting it right is the whole point.
My Approach
I use AI tools every day. They're a core part of how I work now. But I've also spent over seven years building websites, learning what works, and understanding what businesses actually need.
The AI makes me faster and lets me deliver a better product. It doesn't make me unnecessary.
If you want a website that actually works for your business — not just exists on the internet — let's have a conversation.
Cheers,
Lewis
