7 Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers Right Now
Running a small business isn’t exactly a walk in the park, is it? You’re spinning a hundred plates at once - orders, invoices, Sue calling off sick again. The last thing you’ve got time for is trying to figure out why your Google Business Profile (GBP) isn’t doing much other than collecting digital dust.
But here’s the thing - those little oversights on your GBP? They’re probably driving customers straight into the arms of your competitors.
Let’s talk about the seven most common Google Business Profile mistakes that are costing you visibility, rankings, and, most importantly, customers. Don’t worry, though, I’m not just here to nag; I’ve got practical fixes for all of them.
1. Wrong Categories
Picking the wrong category for your business is a bit like entering a cake-baking competition with a meat pie. Swapping ""Coffee Shop"" for ""Restaurant"" or ""Shop"" for something vague is one of the biggest reasons businesses don’t rank well.
Why it matters: Your primary category is the number one factor for local rankings. A massive 86% of Google Business Profile views come from people searching for a specific category, like ""hair salon near me"" or ""emergency plumber Glasgow"". If Google doesn’t know what you actually do, it’s not going to prioritise you in those results.
The fix: Check your category. Go to “Edit Profile” → “Business Information” → “Categories"" and make sure your primary one is as specific as possible. You can add up to nine secondary categories too - don’t skimp on these, but make sure they’re relevant.
2. Missing Photos
Imagine walking past a restaurant that’s got blacked-out windows. Would you go in? Probably not. That’s what your Google Business Profile looks like if you’ve not uploaded photos. Listings with visuals get more clicks, calls, and visits. It’s a fact.
Why it matters: Those pretty pictures catch customers’ eyes in search results. Businesses with photos get 50% more direction requests and significantly higher engagement compared to those with no visuals at all.
The fix: Upload at least 10 high-quality images. Get snaps of your shopfront, inside the premises, products, and even your team. Bonus points for adding some geotagged images (fancy word for photos tied to your location). Update them regularly too - seasonal images are great for catching attention.
3. Ignoring Reviews
If you’re ignoring reviews, you’re essentially ignoring your customers. It doesn’t matter if the review says, “Best chippy in Sheffield!” or “Horrible service, chips soggy”, you need to respond.
Why it matters: Reviews aren’t just for reputation; they directly impact your rankings. A single review can lead to an average of 80 extra website visits and 16 calls. Plus, Google likes businesses that engage with customer feedback. Responding to reviews builds trust and keeps them coming in.
The fix: Make it a habit to reply to every review within 24-48 hours. For positive ones, a simple “Thanks for the feedback, we’re glad you enjoyed it!” does the job. Negative ones? Stay calm, be professional, and address the issue. Customers will appreciate the effort.
4. Incomplete Descriptions
Leaving your business description blank is like expecting people to guess what you do. Even worse, some businesses slap in two vague sentences like “Family-run business. Great services.” Hardly inspiring, is it?
Why it matters: A well-written, keyword-rich description doesn’t just help Google understand your business; it helps potential customers too. 75% of the top-ranking businesses have complete descriptions. Compare that to less than 40% of businesses lingering in the rankings equivalent of a six-hour queue at a theme park.
The fix: Use all 750 characters Google gives you. Mention your services, your location, and what makes you unique. Say something like, “We’re a family-run bakery in Newcastle serving freshly baked sourdough, delicious croissants, and desserts that’ll make your day.”
5. Wrong or Missing Opening Hours
Ever Googled a business, seen they’re ‘open’, and turned up only to find they’re actually closed? Frustrating, isn’t it? Don’t be that business.
Why it matters: Customers rely on your opening hours to plan their visits. If what’s on your profile is wrong, you’re going to annoy them, rack up negative reviews, and lower your chances of being recommended by Google.
The fix: Update your hours, and remember to adjust them for bank holidays or special occasions. Google even lets you sync with your calendar to update automatically. No excuses!
6. No Posts
Not posting on your Google Business Profile is like leaving your shop window empty. Posts let you share offers, updates, events, and more. And they make your GBP look alive.
Why it matters: Google prioritises active profiles, especially with the rise of AI-driven search results. Regular posts also keep your customers in the loop and give them a reason to visit. Businesses not posting regularly often miss out on being the first choice.
The fix: Post at least once a week. It could be anything - a special deal, an upcoming event, or an update like “We’ve got pumpkin spice everything this October!” It only takes 5 minutes.
7. Ignoring the Q&A Section
The Q&A section on your profile is pure gold for potential customers. But if the questions are ignored (or worse, you let some random chancer give a dodgy answer), you’re losing trust and bookings.
Why it matters: Unanswered questions are a bit like leaving your shop phone ringing off the hook - frustrating. Answering quickly and clearly builds trust and removes hesitation.
The fix: Treat the Q&A section like an FAQ. Seed your own questions by having mates or staff ask common ones customers might ask. And make sure you’re notified and ready to respond quickly when new questions pop up.
The Bottom Line
Your Google Business Profile is basically your online shopfront. If it’s messy, out-of-date, or unengaging, you’re pushing people away without even realising it. The good news? Most of these mistakes can be fixed in under an hour.
Here’s your action plan:
